In a landmark announcement, the UK Government has officially confirmed that Universal Destinations & Experiences will develop a major theme park and resort in Bedford, England—marking one of the biggest tourism investments the country has seen in decades.
The multi-billion-pound project is set to create thousands of jobs and provide long-term economic benefits, positioning Bedfordshire as a premier entertainment destination in Europe.
A Nationally Significant Project
According to the government press release, Universal Studios UK has now been classified as a nationally significant regeneration project. The decision means it will benefit from cross-government support to help fast-track planning, infrastructure, and development processes.
“We welcome the news that Universal is investing in the UK and planning to build a potential new theme park and resort in Bedford.”
— UK Government Statement
The park will be built on land previously used as the Stewartby brickworks site and is now under the ownership of Comcast, Universal’s parent company.
Jobs & Economic Impact
The numbers behind the project are staggering:
£50 billion projected boost to the UK economy by 2055
28,000 jobs created, including:
20,000 temporary construction jobs
8,000 long-term operational roles across hospitality, entertainment, and management
A projected 8.5 million annual visitors once the resort opens
Target Opening Date: 2031
While Universal remains in the planning and development stage, the government and company are now aligned on a target opening window of 2031. Planning approvals are expected to be advanced with support from both Bedford Borough Council and national infrastructure agencies.
Construction is likely to begin by 2026, following final planning submissions and public feedback sessions.
Government Support in Practice
The project is being supported through a Regeneration Projects Panel, which brings together key government departments and agencies to help deliver complex developments with wide-reaching benefits.
This includes:
Upgrades to road and rail networks
Coordination with local housing, tourism, and transport bodies
Engagement with Bedford’s growth strategy and community priorities
